עתיק - הכל מעל 100 שנה.
וינטג' - מחוץ לתעשיית האופנה כל דבר בן 50 נחשב לוינטג. בתעשיית האופנה מוסכם באופן כללי כי כל דבר מעל 20 שנה הוא וינטג'. יש אנשים שמסווגים בגדים כווינטג' רק אם הם מעל 30 שנה.
רטרו - מחזיר סגנונות ישנים לחיים, למרות שהם מיוצרים כיום.
ישן - כל דבר מתחת 20 שנה

המילה וינטג' מקורה במינוח יין. היא שימשה את הצרפתים ומאוחר יותר את האנגלים לציון מקום ושנה שבהם יוצר יין, בדרך כלל באיכות גבוהה. כאשר אנו משתמשים במילה וינטג' באופנה, הכוונה היא לשנת יצירת היצירה ולא לסגנון.
אז איך נזהה אם משהו הוא וינטג? חוץ מסוג הבד, תוויות הן חלק עצום מהסיפור. לפני שנות השישים היו רק כמה סוגים של חומר זמינים כמו כותנה, צמר ומשי. בשל המקורות המוגבלים, תוויות על בגדים פשוטות מאוד המציינות מעט מאוד פרטים כגון שם היצרן וכתובת. עם הגדלת החומרים החדשים והכנסת חוקי חומרים דליקים הוקמו בשנות השמונים מכריחים יצרנים לתייג את בגדיהם, המפרטים את סוג החומר בו משתמשים וכוללים הוראות טיפול ספציפיות. בשנת 2002 הועבר חוק נוסף, שאילץ יצרנים לכלול את ארץ מקור החומר.
דרך נוספת לדעת את הגיל של פריט לבוש היא גודל הבגדים. לפני שנת 80 המידות היו שונות מהמידות של ימינו. הגדלים היו בסך הכל גדולים בהרבה והמונח XL לא היה קיים. כך תבינו על פי התוויות הרבה על פרטי הלבוש.

Is it Antique, Vintage, Retro, or just plain old? Are you confused on the difference between them?
The word Vintage is often misunderstood and misused, so to help you understand the difference between them here some explanations;
Antique – Everything over 100 years old.
Vintage – Outside the fashion industry anything that is 50 years old is considered vintage. In the fashion industry it is universally agreed that anything older than 20 years is vintage. Some people only classify clothing as vintage if they are over 30 years old.
Retro – Is bringing old styles back to life, even though they are manufactured today.
Old – Anything under 20 years .
The word Vintage originally comes from wine terminology. It was used by the French and later by the English to denote a place and year when a wine, usually of high quality, was made. When we use the word Vintage in fashion, it refers to the year the piece was made and not the style.
So how do we identify if something is vintage? Labels are a huge part of the story. Prior to the 1960’s there were only a few types of material available such as cotton, wool and silk. Due to the limited resources, labels on clothing where very simple stating very few details such us the name of the manufacturer and their address. With the increase of new materials and the introduction of flammable materials laws were put in place in the 1980’s forcing manufactures to label their clothing, detailing the type of material used and including specific care instructions. In 2002 an additional law was passed, forcing manufacturers to include the country of origin of the material.
Another way to tell the age of an item of clothing is the size of the clothes. Prior to 1980 sizes were different to the sizes of today. Sizes were on the whole much larger and the term XL didn’t exist. So you see, labels can tell you a lot about items of clothing.
